Uncomfortable front seat on long trip.

Car 2013 650xi. So I took a road trip from Phila, PA to Nova Scotia last week. I drove 740 miles in 12 hours the first day to St. John. At about 5 hours my rear end started to hurt a lot. No matter how I adjusted the seat there was no getting away from the way too firm seat cushion. Is it just me or have others had the same experience? Any recommendations to fix what to me is real problem? You would think a car this expensive would have a better seat design. I've done similar trips in my 2016 Corvette and never had a problem like this. Just ordered an extra seat cushion to put on the seat.

I have the same car, 2012...I have to tell you, that bottom seat cushion is horrible. I've been going on some longer trips and yes, they are about the worst seats I have ever had in a car...at any price. Without the massage function, I could not deal with the pain.

Garage List
Please post a pic of your seat with the added cushion. And a review from your back and butt.

Which seats do you have - standard, sport or comfort?
I bought my current 640i at one year old and it came with the comfort seats which I've found to be the best I've ever sat in. I do long trips from north Scotland to southern England (650+ miles) at a stretch and feel no aches or pains.
I'm trading in for a new model and although they're not a cheap option, I had no hesitation in adding them.

I bought the car used and from the build sheet it looks like I got the Standard ventilated seats in the "Executive Package". $5 of padding on the seat cushion would have make a world of difference.

Not sure, but I think the ventilated seats are the most expensive option - shame you can't get comfortable.
Maybe you should think about eating more hamburgers and add a little extra natural padding!!!

Pretty sure the extra pad I ordered will solve the problem without the hamburgers.

Certainly the more healthy option - hope it works for you.

To be clear, I have the "luxury seating package". If this is "luxury", I simply can't imagine the standard seating. My girlfriend and another friend won't ride in the car...too hard to get in and out of for them, and they bitch about the seats the whole time.

I don't know what's included in the 'luxury seating package' as it's not an option in the UK. However, you can easily identify your seats by checking your original configuration - the 'comfort seats' are option #456. The actual differences are an extendable thigh support, adjustable side bolsters, 4-way adjustable lumbar support, a split back rest, the upper half of which moves back and forth and height adjustment of the head restraint. All these are electric - the only manual adjustment is for fore and aft positioning of the head restraint.
Hope that helps.

Based on what you said here then maybe I have the "comfort seats" because I have all the "adjustments" that you listed. The only thing I don't have is the "massage option". Unfortunately they are NOT comfortable on along trip.

Just goes to show that we're all different. Shame you can't get along with them as they're not a cheap option. Hope your cushion works - let us know if it solves the problem.

"Luxury Seating"

ZLS: Luxury Seating Package
415 Power rear Sunshade
453 Front Ventilated Seats
455 Active Front Seats (massage function)
But yeah, my seats have all of the adjustments listed above in the thread...

Difficult to tell without a look at the button array; is your backrest split approx 60/40 with the upper half being adjustable? If so you have comfort seats.

Yes, they look the same as mine, except for the perforated leather (think you said earlier that you had seat ventilation). It would be a fine thing indeed if it ever got hot enough for that over here .
Such a shame you can't get on with them, hope your cushion works.

PS: difficult to see the steering wheel buttons from the photo angle, but is that the 'driving assistant plus' package you have?

Yes they are ventilated. From the Build Sheet, I have the "Driver Assistance Package" (Code ZDA) with Lane Departure (never use), Active Blind Spot Detection, Side & top view cameras, and Speed Limit info. $1900

I'm sure you'll already have figured it but you'll lose the lower seat ventilation with the extra cushion. Silly question but have you tried extending the thigh support and adjusting the lumbar support? On a long run, say over 6 hours, I give the lumbar support a few tweaks and it's amazing how it affects your entire posture.
Reason I asked about the driver assistant is because I've ordered my new car with the driver assistant plus package and I'm hoping it's as good as advertised. At £2,000+ it's not exactly cheap but I really like the idea of adaptive cruise for the motorway and auto stop/go in slow moving traffic.

So I just got the seat cushion that I linked to in the first post. It fits the seat very well and with the rubberized underside it feels like it will not slip around while driving. Went for a short 5 mile drive and it feels wonderful. I don't know how it will feel after 5 hours on the road but I think it is just enough added cushion to solve the problem. Its not very thick and as I sunk into it, I didn't have to adjust any of my previous seat settings. I think it's a winner.
.

Just as an aside, at 5'11" and 164 lbs, I probably do have a bony rear end. This situation probably doesn't bother others that have more "padding".

It certainly fits the seat shape very well, hope it works on your next long run.
