Center console cup holder
Hey everyone,
My GC came with an ash tray in the center console. It's so useless as I can't put anything in it. Has anyone tried retrofitting the cup holder option? Can you repurpose the lid? Alternatively, has anyone been able to take the tray and lighter out, and does it simply turn into a plastic bin? Here's realOEM picture of the area. #11 is what I want. I have #5 in my car. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=51_8154

There is a completely different setup with dual cup holders under that front cover. It’s what I have.

Thanks, I'm talking about the cubby behind the idrive controller. I think everyone has an ashtray

You're right, it appears you cannot reuse the leather lid. I found a picture of this in an actual car. Why is it unique to 6MT? Like wouldn't your elbow hit your drink everytime?

I was able to confirm that the ash tray does indeed fit the DCT cars, but was advised that I may need 4 screws: part# 07147122389

Seems like a lot of work just to get that installed. I use mine for loose change. Don't feel the need to change it.

But I need a place to hold my phone. I refuse to hold it in the cupholder. I have CF trim and it's a shame to not see it with that CF cover flipped up.

Nice, I'll probably look to do this after the new year.
I've taken the entire center console apart so if anyone has any questions that the DIYs don't cover feel free to ask. |

IMO, I don't see how it won't fit. The center console itself is the same part regardless of 6mt or DCT. The only reason 6mt got the cupholder is bc the 6MT boot ring is way bigger than the DCT and the front cup holders won't fit. So 6mt cars got an ashtray up front and a single cupholder behind the idrive controller. The only consideration is that you cannot repurpose the ashtray lid for the cupholder. It'll be a permanent hole there. What year is your car? If you have a 2014, consider also swapping out the idrive controller to the touch version since you have it apart. It won't gain touch functionality without touch ECU and coding, but the larger scroll wheel is a much more ergonomic than the older style.

I was able to pull out part #7 in picture. It's an insert, with it out, there's more volume to the tray if you need more space.
Still doesn't fit my phone though.

I'm planning to retrofit an LCI screen, LCI idrive controller and possibly this center cupholder. I've had the center console apart already as my car came with about $5 in change in the ashtray |

Nice little windfall. Hope you didn't spend it all in one place.

I believe you can still get a decent burger in DC for $5
