The 8 Series has not been revealed yet. The concept car unveiled this week previews the production car, but there will be changes. They naturally want to show the actual production 8 Series before showing the production M8.

Maybe. However, the 850i is rumored to debut a new 4.0L V8. If this is the case it is possible that M has used that as the basis for a new engine to appear in the M8. This would definitely represent an accelerated timeline for M engine development. However, given how early we are being shown this M8 prototype, it appears the entire car is on an accelerated timeline. So I think it's possible we get a new engine rather than yet another application of the S63B44.

I am at Villa Erba right now and they have BMW GT Coupes in a line within the forum here that was used for the unveiling of the new 8 Series Concept.

The lineup ends at the E31 850CSi.

They also have the E31 M8 here and believe it's the first time it actually left Munich. This is all planned and the M8 is very real.

This is true and it's kind of disappointing. I think they should've done another round of cars with an updated DCT that can match up to porsches PDK but they're not. Well seeeeee

No. The next generation 6er is the the 6 GT and will replace today's 5 GT.
It was revealed that the 6 series will be a sports car with slight Gran Turismo feel to it. to take on the 911. Not what BMW calls a GT, which is a quasi-wagon hatchback. Unless BMW has taken another course and decided to make the 6 series into an ugly wagon hatchback.
The 8 series is a big body GT (just take a look at the 8 series Concept), just like the e31 was. 8 series=2 door version of the 7 series=S Class Coupe competitor. But, my guess is that it will be lighter due to the use of carbon fiber.

Hopefully the big announcement is more interesting than the fact that BMW has a problem with 7 series doors flying open suddenly

The 8-Series concept is smaller than the S-class coupe, in fact it's actually a couple of inches shorter than the outgoing 6-Series coupe. I don't think it's going to be the "blimp" or "land yacht" people are acting like it will be, if anything I would guess the only reason people are convincing themselves it's so big is that it's called "8-Series". If they'd have called it "6-Series" again I wonder what the reaction would have been, since again, it's actually smaller than the outgoing car.

No it was not. Rumors to that effect exist but the origin is not from any know inside source. More than likely it was simply speculative reporting from some media outlet.

These rumors, as I've noted before, make no sense. This is not least because with the entire "Z" namespace wide open, there is absolutely no reason to shoehorn a sports car into the "6" lineup. Furthermore, the business case for building such a car to begin with does not appear to exist. BMW went as far as to pair up with Toyota to make the case to carry on their existing Z4 sports car. And now they are going to leap all in on what would effectively be a super car in the 911 class? No. It has all the makings of media sensationalism to get clicks or someone's BMW wet dream.

They have. The 6GT is slated for debut soon to replace the 5GT which is about to end production. The current F12, F13, and F06 6 Series have no known successors under the 6 Series nameplate. Their spiritual successors will come in the form of new coresponding 8 Series models.

Whatever bros... there's a method to that madness you know.

As far as I'm concerned I am HAPPY to wait " so late " - typically one year while they work out bugs in the lower models first, because generally the rest of the car is excellent by then.

It's a smaller blimp and smaller land yacht. The 8 series Concept looks like a GT car. Has the proportions of one. Has the visual heft.
It's called an 8 series for a reason. Now, IF it is smaller than an S Class coupe when the 8 series comes out, that begs the question of what it is competing against? The Lexus LC500/LC-F? And E Class Coupe?

If they called it a 6 series, which was still not a sports car (even in M6 guise) but a Gran Turismo car and was hefty, we'd be wowed. And say that it was such a visual departure from last gen 6 series and the 5 series.

I'm kind of shocked reading half of these comments regarding this teaser footage. It clearly says "M8" and from BMW themselves... Why aren't people more excited?! A big 2 door with loads of toys, and the motor to go with it.

Hey BMW- Where do I sign up?

So basically, they have turned their whole "even numbers for 2 door coupes/4 door coupes", "odd numbers for traditional 4 door sedans" upside down?
So the 6 series will become the ugly wagon hatchback? Great way to confuse customers even more. And who knows what the Z car will be called, and that will possibly be a 911 competitor? This would due to the fact that the Supra would effectively be the same, just not as luxurious.

The existing GC and GT models are essentially being combined from a product perspective. They opted to go with the even numbered names instead of the odd numbered ones. Furthermore, unfortunately - though we should wait until the final reveal to pass judgement - they also appear to be leaning toward the more homely GT aesthetic than the elegant GC one.

I should note here, with the benefit of trying to keep on topic to boot, that the 8 Series four (or perhaps five) door model is likely to retain the graceful form of the outgoing 6GC.

The G29 will be, unless something entirely unexpected occurs, a Z4. And, regardless of the name, it's not a 911 competitor. You don't jump into the ring against the 911 with a 190hp 4 cylinder engine in the entry level (non-US) model. That strategy, nor anything else they come up with other than possibly a potential M model, is not even going to get this car to register on 918 buyer's radar, nevermind a 911. This is an SLC - or perhaps TT if you squint a little - equivalent.

Good question. The S63 Coupe has 4Matic, so I'd say the chances are very good that the M8 will too.
