Drivetrain Malfunction... Again!

So, exactly one month later I get the same error and scary as #*%$ trembling feeling throughout the car.

I got out of the car for about 25 minutes around lunchtime today, put it in reverse, rolled back about 3 feet, then all hell broke loose. I got a ding, an engine light, a "drivetrain malfunction" iDrive message, the car switched to neutral, and started vibrating and making a shaky noise. I couldn't change to drive or reverse, so I finally got it in park and killed the engine. I waited a few seconds, restarted it, and it started normally and did fine. I was going to go straight to the dealer, but I called and couldn't get a loaner right away. I had to be back at work in 30 minutes, so I decided to hold off. I'm planning on taking it in tomorrow to see what they say.

The same exact thing happened on January 16th. They attributed it to low power steering fluid, reset the system, and topped it off. No idea if that's what's going on here or if that was a coincidental finding.

This is really getting frustrating. In the last month I've had to bring my car in 3 times with problems! I haven't gotten stranded or anything horrible, so I'm not too irate, but this is getting ridiculous...

"started vibrating and making a shaky noise" I got the same this past week, but no error as I quickly power it off. Before it happened, I didn't drive it for about a week, then I start it up and that happened but without putting it into gear yet. I assume that if I put into gear then I would get the same "drivetrain malfunction" error. It was my 1st time getting that, and it has 1800 miles currently. It felt like engine was misfiring or some cylinders were not lit up, and I assume that vibration might come from unbalanced torque from different working cylinders.

Southern. I am sure the computer trapped a code. The dealer should know immediately what the problem is or at least which system is causing the trouble. If there is no code stored it means the "malfunction" was a fluke. Perhaps a software glitch.

This is really unacceptable. The least they could've done is gotten a rental for you.

In any event, keep us posted.

Haha. You're the second person keen to get me outta my 6er. If I didn't love my car so much I might be tempted lol. Even if I did want out of my car, the huge financial hit selling it so soon is enough to make me sick.

I'm just hoping they find an easy fix so I can go back to loving it and not having to visit the dealer thrice a month.

Almost 600,000 3 series, 1 and Z4 for "Malfunction"!

The cable connectors and a fuse box terminal in the cars can degrade over time, and that can break the electrical connection between the trunk-mounted battery and the fuse box at the front. If that happens, the cars could lose electrical power, causing the engines to stall unexpectedly, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents posted on its website Saturday.

The company says in documents sent to the NHTSA that the problem stems from movement between the battery cable and the fuse box.

Another good reason to drive a stick!

Hope they figure it out for you, though. That's obnoxious.

I've had 2 drivetrain malfunctions on my 2013 650i. Both malfunctions were preceded by some major shuddering right after starting the engine. The first time they replaced the fuel pump switch. The second time they replaced two of my fuel injectors. If it happens again they're going to replace my car!!!!

I just got it this morning while doing Sunday morning spirited driving. It started shaking at around 100 - 120 MPH, 5-6000 RPM, Sport Mode. The warning came shortly after the engine started shaking. I pulled out, stop and start twice, and it didn't go away. I slowly drive onto the freeway and pull out next exit. At traffic light, I shutdown the engine and open the door to simulate complete shutdown. The error went away after I start it back up 3rd time.

134/210 freeway, Glendale/Pasadena area But, I try not pushing my luck too hard these days. I did LA - SF 3 - 3.5 hours a few times in my 20s. Now, in my early 30s, I am doing roughly 4 - 4.5 hours.

I'd definitely get it checked. I was concerned when I got the warning when I was backing up at 3 mph. I think I'd ______ myself if it happened at +100!

This seems to be a fairly common error message, but it rarely seems to result from the same underlying cause.

I begin to wonder if it has to do with fuel injectors. They might have problem delivering fuel at high RPM and cold weather in my case, so some cylinders went offline which cause that shaking. I guess the dealer will have to figure that out. I will have to drop it off mid March, since I have 2 busy weeks coming up.

I have so much problem with 2012 ML Bluetec last year. After much going back and forth, Mercedes bought it back under lemon law. I hope this is not a repeating theme for 2013.

I was planning to keep this thing for my grand kid, but at this rate it might not make it till then.

Do you think the exhaust flap mod could have anything to do with it?

It is very unlikely, but I will probably undo it before sending it to the dealer.
