Soft Close Doors

Hi guys

Is the mechanism supposed to operate even when the door is closed properly? i read that they updated software to stop this happening on the 7 series and it only activates when the door isn't closed properly.

Also, how robust is the mechanism? i find every passenger that gets in and doesn't shut the door properly tries to reopen the door and close it just as soft close is doing its thing. It really...really irritates me and i find myself in a "just leave it....ugh...nevermind" situation.

Perhaps I'm just a grumpy bastard...

Not sure I understand your question and interpretation of the soft close operation.

"Proper" closing would be gently bringing the door into contact with the soft close motors without using any force, which in turn, pull the door tight to ensure the seals contact, then release to the latched position. So of course the mechanism will operate. The main principle behind soft close doors is minimized acoustics on BMW's.

If they're closed with force like a normal door, they still perform the same cycle to ensure the latch is engaged securely.

The motors are fairly robust these days and I haven't had a soft close motor go bad since 2006 on my E66 760.

I am the same way. I get into a non-soft close door car and I forget, and automatically gently push the door. Then I remember, open and put a bit more force into closing the door.
