Report: 2017 M6 -- 600 HP, 500 lbs lighter, Active-Aero, Optional AWD

The current BMW 6 Series is hardly the ultimate driving machine. Pretty? Sure. But it’s also overweight, poorly packaged, and soft-edged. Even the high-performance M6 is, in essence, a powerful grand touring car that feels more at home on the highway than on winding roads. All this will change with the debut of the new BMW 6 Series for 2017.

The big enabler for the change in character is an ambitious weight-loss program. Carbon-fiber elements, additional high-strength steel sections, a broader use of aluminum, and some magnesium and titanium parts should help the next 6 Series coupe drop to about 3,500 pounds, down from 4,000 pounds today. The next BMW 6 Series will also have a lower center of gravity and a more balanced weight distribution. Shorter overhangs and a wider track should make the car feel more agile.

It also helps that the BMW 6 Series’ platform, shared with the 3, 5, and 7 Series, is more flexible than before. It means the various body styles—coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe—can evolve separately to serve different audiences. To that end, the coupe and convertible will shrink to support the ambitious weight-saving efforts, but the four-door Gran Coupe will actually grow a bit longer to provide more interior room, addressing a shortcoming of most four-door coupes on the market today.

For all BMW’s recent focus on green cars, don’t expect a hybrid 6 Series, even though such technology is being developed for the next 7 Series. Instead, there will be a turbocharged inline-six engine delivering 350 hp and a V-8 rated at 475 hp. The BMW M6 will get the 600-hp, twin-turbo V-8 from the 30th Anniversary Edition 2015 BMW M5.

The BMW M6 will also feature active aerodynamic elements. (They’ll probably be offered on the rest of the range as well.) Rear-wheel drive will again be standard, with all-wheel drive as an option on all models, including the M6.
The net result is a car that aims less at the Mercedes-Benz CLS and more at the Porsche—which is exactly what outgoing CEO Norbert Reithofer is promising.

I doubt this will be a 2017 model. Perhaps a 2018.

The headlight/bumper is kinda hate or love. To me it's ugly
500 lb weight reduction is a lot! Means the M6 will weigh 3700,3850,4000 lb for all 3 models. This weight, beside that power means a new monster is on the way

New M6 won't be even close to 2017. Closest will probably be mid-2018 for the M6 Cabrio as a MY2019 and early 2019 for the coupe as either MY2019 or MY2020. LCI just came out and it usually has a 2-3 year lifespan before the model is discontinued and put on a M hiatus of a year or so before the new M model is out.

Yep, this would be a 2019 model here in the USA.

Last 6 series went 4 years until LCI (04-07 models)....then 3 years under that (08-2010).

I am freaking out because I am about to pull the trigger on leasing a 2015 M6GC but I am afraid that its going to change soon. Everything Ive read says 2017 as a 2018 model. Are you sure it will be 2019?

M models usually have a 6-7 year life span and sometimes a year or two of a gap before the next platform is introduced. The E92 M3 was produced from 2007-2013, E60 M5 from 2003-2010, E63 M6 from 2005-2010 with a two year gap before the F12 M6 Convertible was introduced in 2012. Add 7 years to 2012 and the next M6 should be out by 2019 assuming there is no gap in production. That is unless BMW wants to bring the next iteration to market in an unusually fast manner which would seem strange to me. Regardless if you're leasing you shouldn't be concerned by this, you could easily get rid of the lease as soon as the new car is out. Also are you planning on leasing more than 36 months?

you'll be fine, it WONT be that quick. BMW wants to capitalize present model to the max before reinvesting the entire line again. LCI is here and thus 36-48 months. Do a 36 month lease then you are in the drivers seat. GL! GC is best model BMW has right now.

39 months. I believe the new 5 series is going nextgen after only six years. 2011-2016. I know the 7 series is changing in 2016 and that would be 8 years.

6 years is around the time I mention "6-7" that gives you more than enough time to enjoy the M6. The LCI just came out so that means the current generation will be around for AT LEAST another 24 months before a the G generation 6er is out. Then another year after the G gen 6er before the G generation M6 is out means your looking at 36 months minimum before you see a new M6.

I did some research, the Audi A7 is getting a gen change in 2017 but that came out in 2010. The CLS is supposedly getting a gen change in 2018 and that came same year as the 6er 2011 as a 2012 model. The thing I don't understand is why would BMW do it after 6 years. I looked at some BMW model histories and they've never changed that quickly.

Listen man just get the car but make sure you negotiate the heck out of the dealer on that lease. They have too many of them sitting on the lot across the country and can't wait to move them.

39 month lease doesn't sound really attractive either ~ IMHO 36 months or less is the target.

39 months is the lowest rate. For M6 at an MSRP of about $126,000 i would be paying $1,487 a month with nothing down just taxes. Is that good?
