Yes, a solid car, but repairs are expensive, so my suggestion is to get an extended warranty. That is what I did with my car, and I am the original owner.

Did you get 70k or 100K miles warranty? Did you get it directly from BMW dealer and how much does it cost? Thanks for the info

BMW 2 year 70k (30k on my car in 4 years) platinum -- $4950 w/o tax purchased from BMW dearship in NYC area. Prices vary by state. And there are geographical restrictions on where you can purchase these warranties.

I am from Florida and my dealer would not discount the 2/70 warranty on my 2013. $5,350 plus tax. I was in Baltimore and bought the same warranty from BMW of Towson for about $5100, a $250 discount, plus Maryland has no sales tax.
I would never own one of these cars w/o.

I'm sorry, but people talk about buying extended like they expect things to break in tune of over $5k over the next 2 years, but haven't discussed what actually has gone wrong with their cars or through observations on this forum.
One can't make a sound financial decision such as this without knowing the risks on the other side. So what are the most common issues in the M6 that hasn't been covered by recall or extended part warranty from BMW?

Flying Ace, you analysis is only partly correct. Statistically the average car will have less than $5k in repair issues, but some will have alot more. Its really insurance for the unknown. Further a car maybe perfect for 4 years but have many failures thereafter. Few of these are ost-warranty so its difficult to know if the average is low or high. My car has had only one warranty repair in 40k miles, replacing the coolant lines. But I can't risk a catastrophic failure or a long repair without a loaner, for a daily driver so to me the 5k was worth the risk of losing some or all if the car was perfect.

You may recall during your E9X M3 ownership days, this question is brought up all the time and still is today for the remaining 2013s rolling off factory warranty. The calculated catastrophic risk for the M3s were the rod bearing issues. Minor risks were throttle actuators and idle air control valve issues, I've also seen bad ignition coils and valve stem issues. These were all known, well documented, albeit rare risk. That is a calculated risk where enough information is known. For throttle actuators and ICVs, the calculation is, it wasn't worth insuring for that, despite the frequent occurrences, mostly b/c people can rely on the extended 7-year 70k CA emissions warranty and the fact fixes are usually under $1000. Point is, can someone just point out all the observations of catastrophic and minor but frequent issues that has occurred since 2013? Heck, most catastrophic issues should have came up already as the motor and transmission has been around since the 2010 E70 X5M days. If the answer is no, there really is nothing to note, then I would say, skip the insurance.

Well I bought a 2004 Audi Allroad off lease with clean service history and 35k miles. Bought a 3/36 warranty, and over the next 1.5 years and 15k miles I had $17k in repairs, 16k which was covered by insurance.
My wife's Porsche needed a new thermostat after warrantyy expired. Dealer charged $2,200 to fix (and that included a 10% coupon). I know that I could have gotten that cheaper, but that still is 40% of the warranty cost in one repair. Insurance is like gambling, the house always wins. So based on your view, no one should ever gamble. The problem is that 20-40% will have claims of way more than the cost of the coverage and that's the gamble. Do you own a house? Why buy house insurance? Have you ever had a house claim? I have had one in 30 years of home ownership.

This is a great topic as im in the market for a used m6 coupe or GC 2014 or 2015 depend on price. Im thinking of purchasing at a non bmw dealership which obviously means non CPO (btw BMW has changed their CPO policy and its terrible imo). Who do you guys recommend for extended coverage on a m6? Ive checked with carchex and they dont offer coverage on the m6 at all.

If you buy used with a factory warranty remaining you can buy a BMW gold or platinum extended warranty

I bought a CPO 09’ 750LI years ago with 27k miles on the clock, during the first years I had 9 warranty repairs totaled at 21k. Everything from surround view camera, battery, air suspension, rough idle, engine shut off during idling, and last one was engine main seal oil leak which was 10k along. Traded the car in even with Long remaining warranty for a brand new 7 series. Since then I only purchase brand new Bmw models and never ever a single issue.
That being said, from my personal experience, if you have to buy used, buy warranty regardless of cost, you will mostly come out ahead, and the peace of mind along would totally worth the premium. |
