Why BMW sold only 18 winter tyres for 640xd?

I went to a BMW dealer to buy winter tyres for my 2015 BMW 640xd Gran coupe M-package. I wanted to buy 19 but he told me that they are offering only 18 for winter? Why is that?

Does anyone have any idea if i could put 19 winter tyres and whether it should be a different size front and rear, considering that the car is x-drive?

Usually the dealer will stock a certain size of wheels and tires in the dealership in preparation for winter sales. So they may choose to not to stock or offer anything larger because they've set their markups and prices for the season.

The second reason is that the price leap for 19" wheels in the winter is massive. Usually people don't worry about making as much of a statement in the winter. A little more tire on the rim would also prevent rim damage which is more probable to happen in the winter months.

Because the 18's will give you better winter traction. If you are dead set on 19's, just buy a second set of stock rims and winter tires to match.

You can get winters in the same sizes as you summers if you want to. But BMW only has a limited choice in winter sizes.

Why are you buying tires from a dealership anyway?

You're paying a huge premium for nothing.

Not necessarily. We have a National Michelin account here. We sell them at about the same price as Costco, usually cheaper than local tire dealers.

Gotta call around to know for sure though.

I'd say you're a VERY rare dealership if the tire isn't marked up at least like $40.

You always want the smallest diamer wheel with the skinniest cross section of tire(high psi or pressure pushing down into the snow). You also want a high sidewall, so to give you a softer ride and more "bite" when driving on frozen surfaces.

IF the car came with 19's you would go with the smallest diamter wheels that can clear your front brake calipers. In your case that is a 18 inch wheel.

I just check on TireRack.com 's website and they say you could run any of these tire/wheel sizes...

225/50R18
245/40R19

17" is a bad joke.
There are also very good winter sport tires so the car will perform properly even with 19".
