Umm, wait a minute...why not complain? Are you going to pay 70k for fake sound...??
I love my M3, however if I was buying something new...gotta be honest, the new Corvette doesn't have fake sound, looks better and gee, its faster too...!!

Maybe I am bothered that valuable audio amplifier resources are being used reproducing a higher noise floor. The step-up audio system should provide the ability to disable this feature if only to provide lower distortion and better signal to noise ratio.

BMW should've made this an aftermarket accessory in a USB drive "M performance sound package" which is basically a recording of engine sound. Just for the people who like it (like OP).

For the rest of us.. It is lame. It will go down in history as one of the lamest things any car manufacturer has done.

Yeah its lame as hell! My last car a 11' X5 3.5 m sport had it. You could only really hear it at WOT or when cold, but it sounded retarted! Wanted to get an exhaust but just never got around to it...My first real mod on my f30(which doesn't have the fake sound correct?)

I thought the F10 M5 was the first vehicle to use Active Sound. How would a 2011 X5 have it?

If BMW didn't make it public, you really wouldn't notice it. It is THAT useless in my experience. I think the idea of having it is slightly lame, but definitely not a deciding factor on whether or not to buy a car. That's just naive. Frankly, if Active Sound is the M3/M4's biggest downfall, it will be a great car. If it get's criticized for sloppy handling, that's a different story.

well, that's the problem, too much cabin isolation. I don't mind getting more sensory input from the outside, even if it's road noise and exhaust drone. This isolating the cabin so it's like a library is taking it too far.

This is easily solvable. Just take some exhaust hose (like they have at a shop to vent exhaust out the garage door) tape it to the exhaust tips and rout it around into the passenger window. You will then hear the real exhaust sound.

Why don't you have your dad buy you a GTR and let us know? Too soon after he bought you the M3?
