Low Dust Brake Pads
Anyone changed out their pads for low dust pads? If so, which ones? I have a 2014 GC and get a lot of grey colored dust on my Liquid Black wheels that I would like to reduce. The dust is easy to remove during normal washes but I find it unsightly.

All the German manufacturers love dusty brake pads...

I'd consider spending $8k on carbon brakes if it meant I never had to wash a rim again.
The front wheels are really bad, but there's not much that I've heard of that can be done.

Creating dust is an inherent by-product of disc brakes.
Brake dust production is determined largely by the ingredients in the pads themselves. There are pads that dust heavily (such as most German manufacturers favor) and others that dust relatively little. Some dust pads and rotors shed dust that clings to wheels more than others. Some pad compounds mix in greater amounts of hard materials, including metal. Different pad compounds yield different braking characteristics, may affect ABS, pad longevity, pedal feel, rotor wear, noise, etc. As OP points out, changing out your factory pads for a set that make less dust can indeed make your brakes soil your wheels more slowly and less noticeably. You have to determine whether you like the different braking they offer.

more dust is softer material that (usually) is better at stopping, but doesn't squeak normally, doesn't ruin rotors and gives you more linear braking
less dust is often from hard material that (usually) is not as good at stopping but rather creates little dust and last a long time, can often give you a more 'instant' feel of braking at the top, subjectively that will be liked more to some than others. there are some exceptions I am sure. I forgot which but I used to use an Aussie pad I beleive that was great for braking and low dust. Since BMW changes my brakes, they can put on whatever they want... I wax my wheels with a spray cleaner wax and it helps keep dust from sticking. |

I might be better off waiting until the 4-year 50,000 free service has expired before I replace the pads with low-dust pads. |

BMW replaces the pads when the cars tells them to. There are electronic sensors on each caliper. When the pads wear, they get replaced. It depends 100% on how often and how hard you use your brakes. As z4 said, no limit on replacements. The service reminder even provides an indication of when replacement is required. I'm not sure of the accuracy.

Word is that BMW has changed to less dusty pads with 15 MY.

After about 2,000 miles, I starting noticing less and less brake dust on my 2014. Due to this reduction I am no longer contemplating changing the pads. Has anyone else expierenced a reduction in brake dust?
