Can two adults fit comfortably in the rear seats?
I think the title says it all.
I know I bought my 3er in part because you couldn't fit an adult in the back seat of the former 6er. I've always felt if the car maker (of a two door car) is going to put seats back there that two grown (but not corpulent) people should be able to actually sit there for short trips.

The 6er is not for hauling people, and as they did not create 6 inches in the rear seats in the new car so, no, it will not allow grown adults to use it for any meaningful trips. Thats what the 6er GC is supposed to be for....
And like you, I do have a need for this more and more, so I'm close to ending my 7 year relationship with the e63 and heading for the F30 in the fall...

I find the rear seats to be completely useless. It is a stretch to call it a 2+2, maybe a 2+1 (with the +1 being behind the passenger seat and the passenger is hugging his/her knee quite tightly - and blocking visibility from the side window). I almost wish they had just made it a 2+0 and left it open for storage. It would cut down on weight, and, more importantly, decrease the amount of leather that has to be cared for. The back is finished nicely, but I think the fine designers at BMW could make a storage compartment that looks as nice as the rest of the 6er.
I've squeezed one person back there on a couple of occasions, but it is a hassle as the seats take forever to move electronically (the only option - this is a big problem if it's pouring and the Nappa on your doors is getting drenched while waiting for the seat to move and the rear passenger to climb in), the rear seats are leather-lined caves that you have to crawl into, and then there is no leg room. When I have my seat set in my normal position there is approximately 1.5" between the seat back and the bottom cushion. The only benefit to me is the insurance deduction for not being a 2-seater, like the SL, and the ability to fit a third person in the back for a quick trip. Honestly, I'd give up the insurance savings and the 3 person capability to not have to care for the massive amount of leather back there that pretty much acts as a dust collector.

I believe adults can fit back there but not for long. The front has so much room their seats can be pushed forward giving the rear some room to work with.
However, anyone sitting behind me would be in trouble. I think with the average sized adult it could be fine for short trips to a restaurant. What I would do with a double date is put the 2 men up front and the ladies in the rear. I think that would work. I couldn't sit back there though. |

Thanks all.
It sounds like I may need to just stick with a 3er coupe for daily driving. I like the looks of the 6, but it doesn't sound like it'd make as good a utility car. I tend to toss the dry cleaning, groceries and assorted whatever I buy in the back, and it would likely be fine for that. But as I said originally, once in a while I have to drive a third person to lunch or something. And even though I'm always chiding my partners about their weight, I don't dislike their corpulence so much that I would want to squeeze one of them back there. In my 3er, a normally sized person can sit there in comfort -- there's a decent amount of leg and shoulder room -- even for a longer ride (say a couple hours).

I believe the 1er has more rear legroom than the 6er. When I was driving one at the PC I was shocked at the space in the back of that car. There is plenty of front legroom, and the trunk is huge for a car in this class. I'm glad they did this rather than sacrificing either of those for the sake of rear legroom.

Put my son in the " back seat" one time boy was that a mistake I had to hear him complain the whole way home. I couldn't say a word he was right, no adult deserves the punishment of riding in my back seats.

My 1 year old fits back there just fine.
If I developed a good case of scoliosis I could sit back there, but only with the front seat all the way forward and the door open. |

When I was shopping for my 6 series, I tried to sit in the back of 2013 M6, and the 2013 650 coupe. It was honestly a little bit too tight for my taste. That was the biggest reason why I went for Gran Coupe.

Ten years ago I had an E36 coupe and I did some long trips in that with my friends (180cm+) in the rear seat. They weren't loving it but there were no issues weather they could fit or not.
The F13 is massive compared to the E36 so how can there be no room back there? |

The hood is a mile long while keeping the cabin on the quaint side. The front space is wonderful, but it leaves nothing for the back. The back of my seat would touch the rear bottom cushion, but I moved it forward ever so slightly to prevent contact. This isn't the best comparison in the world, but it's kinda like the SLS where the front seats are a few inches from sitting atop the rear axel. Obviously it's not to that extent with a back seat, but it's as close as possible with a 4-seater. The styling is what matters the most, and I wouldn't change a thing - except for replacing those seats with a nicely appointed storage area instead of seats.

There is no way an adult, maybe a small child, can sit in the back of a 6er. That's why I went with the E92 M3 vs. a 650i M-Sport.
I would have liked to have the B&o and cooled seats. But I need a car that can fit more than 2 if needed.

As I glanced through this thread I panicked a bit until I realized you were talking about the 2-door Coupe and not the GC. lol

The 6 GC is quite stunning looking, if not a good value for the money (IMO), and I'm not totally sworn off of it as the replacement for my e92, but I'm certainly going to wait for the F32 to come out before I make my buying decision. I'm not really seeking a GT-type of car. Despite wanting a bit more luxury/panache, that's something I can surely do without. First and foremost, every car, to me, is transportation and as such, each seat in my cars must be at least as endurable as a seat on a commuter jet for a one hour trip. I feel that if the seats are worse than that, there's no point in having a seat.

I've said this elsewhere but....
Have a 535 xiGT, test drove and bought a 640 ix Vert (GT is going back) During the test drives (2) wife (5'4") sat in back seat behind the salesman. Don't know how headroom or legroom compares in the coupe vs vert. but she said it was more than tolerable back there and the salesman wasn't particularly far forward. I do think she loves the look of the car and that might have something to do with it. Short version: our's is under construction now. |
