Question Accounting/Corporate Database Help

The company I'm currently working for is using an accounting system that was designed to run on Windows 2000 and is a total piece of shit. I've finally convinced my boss it's time to replace it and we need some options. Could anyone recommend a company or some place to find help?

How many users? The relatively small company I work for uses Sage Peachtree Accounting, which is love hate. It gives you more control than Quickbooks, but is memory intensive and cumbersome at times. For larger organizations, I've seen some Access VBA based custom solutions that seem pretty slick. We'll probably be moving that direction soon.

Small. We are talking 6-8 users. Quickbooks wouldn't offer enough functionality from what I've been told and my first thought was something done in Access. Obviously it depends on the application and the complexity but how much are we talking for a custom system? Maybe 3-4k?

honestly, I couldn't tell you if that's high low or right. I always envisioned learning the software and making my own. But that's turning out to be more time intensive than I have time for. But if you have any peachtree questions I can use that shit in my sleep, so fire away.

Quickbooks or Peachtree would be your best bet. They are very popular so you'll be able to find a wealth of knowledge on them relatively quick.

Most of my clients have custom software, but a few use a system called Great Plains (I think it's now Microsoft Dynamics GP). Those companies all have at least $50M in revenue and accounting staff of about 25-40 so that might be too powerful/expensive for you.

What is the best program for just Payroll? I already have a accountant that does the tax. I just have to write the check and print it on a program.

I currently use Versacheck payroll and it's not that great..

Peachtree has a few payroll only softwares. If they're anything like payroll in the full accounting database, it's pretty straightforward, but not really sure what you're trying to do or how many are on your payroll. When you say accountant does the tax, do you mean he does all the income taxes / social security / medicare withholdings for payroll as well?
