That's old time philosophy, before pure synthetic oil and computer designed engines were introduced. Also, it was good for business (especial oil companies and Jiffy Lubes).

I would never take a brand new BMW to Jiffy Lube for 3 reasons:
1. The high school mechanic would be looking for an oil dip stick.
2. They would not use BMW oil or oil filter (unless you provide it, then that's $70 for oil + $20-30 for labor)
3. They wouldn't have the BMW oil filter tool, so probably going to use a pipe wrench.

I'm very anal about changing oil myself. I'm edgy about the 15k oil change thing, so I take it to the dealers for the "free" change and I change the oil myself between changes. If you don't have a garage, just pay the BMW dealer $100. It would be only a $30 savings doing it yourself.
