Of course they could have engineered something different, but that's not how it works in the automotive industry. Not enough sales on the 6 to amortize the cost of a unique system. As it is there are plenty of 6 series specific components for which we pay. They had to draw the line somewhere. I am sure there are technical and packaging requirements that also contributed to the decision.
While it's never really bothered me, I kind of am looking forward to this feature on my M5. It also has the hands free closing.

I'm sorry but I'm not buying the "not enough sales" pitch. I've seen kia's with this feature...
Either way it is still a great car!
