Something BMW has been doing to all turbo engine exhausts is a raw popping/bubbling/gurgling at liftoff or when shifting. It happens on my X3 35i, my 535i loaners, the 335i, the new Z4 28i, and the x5 50i. Do not worry. When driving past people, it is a very impressive noise.
