You can check you map version. The head unit numbers will change. You can also check hidden service menu. Dealer does not have E-sys, they only have ISTA+ and ISTA-P. ISTA will show Integration or I-Step, which is firmware level for vehicle; E-sys will show this and more information.

Vehicles that had software from ISTA-P 3.58.3 or below and upgraded to next level 3.59.0 lost seat memory gong (ie the auditory confirmation of setting seat preference). But, those with LED adaptive headlamps also got improved parameters for a smoother system. As such, upgrading is a "crapshoot" because there are no release notes indicating changes and you could gain function enhancements or lose features.

Root directory means not within any folder of USB flash drive. For example, C:\ and not C:\update. There are different drive formats (NTFS, FAT32, etc). You can right click drive and select properties so see how it is formatted. If incorrect or undesired setting, then you right click and select format to change. Formatting will erase entire drive contents so you must place files after process.
