You're so right; I've had the 640i on 4 test drives totalling about 1k miles and, no matter what mode the car's in, the steering feels detached and somewhat vague in the straight ahead position.
It's just like my F10 (same part number for rack/motor/control assembly); both very good cars with the single, but very significant, exception of the lacklustre steering.
I so wanted the new 6'er, but I'll now be looking at either the new M5, which has hydraulic steering, or the forthcoming 3 series coupé. It will have electric steering, but according to 'Autocar UK', the sedan's steering is perfect.
