I had my last Benz color sanded, the factory Black paint had a clear that was where the orange peel was. I used a well known shop that knew what they were doing and careful not to sand through the clear. The car's finish was like a mirror. I believe the older auto paints were solvent based, not oil based, at least not in the past 20 years.
