I had a similar problem but my car did not die, but was misfiring like crazy and smoking out the tailpipes. Strong smell of fuel and tailpipe was wet with fuel. Injector had failed. Injectors, plugs and coils were all changed. It is not not uncommon for an injector to fail apparently. I know of one other M5 currently with a similar issue.
