The reason why the bigger 6 had less back seat room then the smaller 2 or 4, is BMWs attempt to make the 6 a performance car. By moving the engine closer to the middle of the car ("mid-engine"), they can give the car better handling. So the room that is not there in the back seat, is empty space in the engine compartment. I traded in a 3 convertible for a 6, and the handling difference is very noticeable. So I use my back seat for packages only.
