I believe adults can fit back there but not for long. The front has so much room their seats can be pushed forward giving the rear some room to work with.
However, anyone sitting behind me would be in trouble.
I think with the average sized adult it could be fine for short trips to a restaurant. What I would do with a double date is put the 2 men up front and the ladies in the rear. I think that would work.
I couldn't sit back there though.
