The original M cars were light and nimble, modern M cars are designed to appeal to a broader audience that want more luxury and must comply with safety legislation, they are thus much heavier.

I agree that the E39 M5 was the sweet spot for the M5, it's a car that's great at almost everything, but not outstanding at anything, the perfect Q car.

There was an M car before the E30 ...
