The F13 is massive compared to the E36 so how can there be no room back there?

Proportions and priorities.
The hood is a mile long while keeping the cabin on the quaint side. The front space is wonderful, but it leaves nothing for the back. The back of my seat would touch the rear bottom cushion, but I moved it forward ever so slightly to prevent contact. This isn't the best comparison in the world, but it's kinda like the SLS where the front seats are a few inches from sitting atop the rear axel. Obviously it's not to that extent with a back seat, but it's as close as possible with a 4-seater.
The styling is what matters the most, and I wouldn't change a thing - except for replacing those seats with a nicely appointed storage area instead of seats.
