I believe OP understands that when the transmission is in P the car will not roll, but since they live on an incline they would prefer to have the brake hold the car and take any stress rather than the locked transmission.
Alas, I have no solution to the problem. I've just gotten in the habit of manually engaging the parking brake every time I park the car.
