Yes, if the engine idles too low, it will feel a bit rough. Maybe they did this to save a fraction of fuel on the city cycle numbers.
I cannot comment on why 6 cylinders do not do it - but I suspect they idle well above 500 rpm, as I recall from my old 335i.
