I agree with you - it would be nice if they matched up like they often (but not always) did in the old days.
You know, I think that it is entirely possible that, in the near future, we might see the displacement be exactly 1 less than the model designtation. So it would be:
4L* V8: x50i
3L I6: x40i
2L I4: x30i
1.5L I3: x25i
*Some rumblings about the V8 getting downsized to 4L (like Audis upcoming 4L TFSI).
The V12, of course, would be the exception.
That's all complete shot-in-the-dark speculation on my part, of course.

I still prefer the logic that a 530i has a 3.0l under the hood, the bump in power (turbocharging) equating a bump to a 535i still seems somewhat logical, but 540i just seems odd to me. In comparison to their 4.4 and 4.8 engines, I would have to say naming the cars x44i and x48i would also make more sense than x45i and x50i...
