I use bimmerlink, but I've never used it before to check oil level. :-) However in the computers, 255 is maximum decimal number that can be represented in 1 byte / 8 bits. It can be a number from 0 to 255, so basically 255 is max value. Assuming that max oil level in 650i is about 9.5 liters, you could divide 255 / 9.5 to see how this number will change if you have less oil than you should.
