BMW replaces the pads when the cars tells them to. There are electronic sensors on each caliper. When the pads wear, they get replaced. It depends 100% on how often and how hard you use your brakes. As z4 said, no limit on replacements. The service reminder even provides an indication of when replacement is required. I'm not sure of the accuracy.
