Answering my own question. As reported in the dead tree edition of Autoweek in the January 9, 2012 issue:

The M6 Gran Coupe is set to run the same twin-turbocharged 4.4l-liter V8 direct-injection gasoline engine and seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox combination as the recently unveiled M5, in a move that will pitch it into direct competition with the Maserati Quattroporte, the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, the Porsche Panamera GTS and the Audi RS7.
The M variant will arrive in 2013, after the six- and eight cylinder models which launch this summer in North America following a debut at the Geneva motor show.
